EMBER

This time, Cove did the driving. I think it was possibly the first time I’d ridden along when she was behind the wheel. Her driving was a bit… well, let’s just say that I was relieved we didn’t have to drive far.

We pulled up to a large mansion, driving around the back to a miniature parking lot. This place confused me. It looked like private property, like a wealthy person lived there, and yet there was a parking lot with nearly a dozen cars.

Cove pointed to the entrance, telling us about the inner layout of the building. “We’ll need to be stealthy and sneak around.” That, I’d already figured.

“If it helps,” Emily said, raising her hand like she was in a classroom and not a small red Honda. “I’ve been practicing this cloaking spell. We can use it to get to the library undetected.”

Brilliant idea. We stepped out of the vehicle, and Emily did the spell, making us invisible to the witches in the mansion. Hopefully, they wouldn’t be able to sense our magic. Or if they did, they’d assume it was one of their own witches.

Cove led us down one hall, up the stairs, down another hall, and into the library—a large room with a ton of books lining the shelves that covered every wall. We’d managed to get in unnoticed and got right to work, scouring through the books.

We dug through piles and shelves with journals and textbooks. We searched for any clue we could possibly find. But what caught my eye was the corner of a frame sticking out from behind one of the shelves. I tried to grab it, but it didn’t budge.

Wedged behind the bookshelf was a painting, old and forgotten. It took some shimmying, but I pulled it out, blowing away the dust and swiping the cobwebs with my arms. The canvas had been slashed diagonally, from one corner to nearly the opposite corner. I lifted the piece of canvas, connecting the painting.

Beneath the layers of cobwebs and moldy dirt was a portrait of a family. In the center was a man in a colonial uniform, long hair tied back, the hint of a smirk on his serious face. A face that I recognized.

It was the powerful warlock in that vision Balt had shared with me. This was him! I wanted to shout out to the others, but then I’d have to explain how I knew it was him, and I couldn’t do that without mentioning Balt. Maybe if I could find a name, it would have some other information that would point the others to knowing it was him. And the warlock’s name would make it easier to know where to look for more information.

My eyes scanned the painting and the two women on either side of the man. One was young, a teenager. Not quite old enough to have any wisdom, but on the verge of womanhood. Or back then, she’d probably already entered womanhood. They married at 15 or something back then, right?

The other woman was around the man’s age, obviously his wife.
